Achill Island weekend

on Wed, 2012-08-29 21:01

Last weekend we hit off for Achill with a handful of knowledge, some charts and a depth finder. This year has been one of much exploration for GSAC. We are a very active club, which gives us the added bonus of being able to take a chance on a dive site in the hope of finding something new and unexplored.

The group dropped in on the Bills, Inish Galloon and dived below the impressive Minaun cliffs.

Killary camping weekend

on Sun, 2012-07-22 21:10

Just back from a great weekend's diving on Inis Turk and camping on the north shore of Killary Harbour. No campsite, just wild camping on the side of a hill. I have to say I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but it was great craic. We'll definitely have to do it again. Fair play to Thomas Moore for organising. And two great dives on Inis Turk into the bargain. Sure what more could you want. See the Facebook photo album for some great shots.

Volvo Ocean Race 2012

on Mon, 2012-07-02 16:10

GSAC is involved with safety cover for the Volvo Ocean Race again this year, with safety boats in the docks from 6pm to 11pm every day of the festival, in conjunction with NUIG/GMIT Sub Aqua Club. We are also providing two dive boats with Search And Recovery divers as cover for the actual inshore racing off Salthill on the final Saturday. It sounds like a lot of work, but there was no shortage of volunteers and a lot of the time people are staying around after their shift ends because they are enjoying themselves so much.

Portmagee - June bank holiday

on Tue, 2012-06-05 11:07

Just back from Portmagee Co. Kerry where we spent the June bank holiday weekend again this year. Every year we debate going somewhere else "just for a change" but it's so hard to beat that we always end up coming back. The hostel and The Moorings pub are like second homes to us at this stage. Big crew this year - 32 divers in the water, 4 boats on the go. Miserable weather, but great diving. Fair play to DOD Paul Connery who had his hands full.

Cox'n training - Newquay

on Fri, 2012-05-25 15:33

A few snaps from a recent trip on the bay. Helen and Gemma were preparing for their upcoming cox'n (boat handling) test and we were hoping to do a bit of rough weather practice. It didn't quite work out that way as you can see - quite the opposite in fact. But we toughed it out with a trip over to Newquay and a little bit of training along the way :)
